For some, a standard storage unit can do the trick. But for many others, certain items will require a little more care, especially if you’re storing your things for an extended period. Climate conditions around the country can vary, which can mean the same thing for your storage unit. Climate control means that we use reasonable efforts to maintain a temperature in the building where the storage unit is between 55 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

With climate controlled storage from CubeSmart, you can have peace of mind knowing your items are being stored with care. Plus, our climate controlled storage units come in a variety of sizes so you have the flexibility to store items large or small. Additionally, CubeSmart customers also benefit from:

If it’s important to you, it’s important to us.

Depending on the region in which you live, there are a variety of different systems used to reasonably maintain temperature in storage units. Even within a region, systems can differ from facility to facility.

Climate controlled storage units are heated in the winter and cooled in the summer. Though not humidity controlled, they are typically located indoors of a facility, so humidity levels could be similar to inside your house.

Sometimes referred to as swamp cooling, evaporative cooling can be found in high heat, low humidity regions. Warm air is brought into the system and run over a filter that is dampened by a water drip system. The air is cooled as it passes over the system. It is then pushed through our affordable storage units using a circulation pump.

In areas that experience harsh winters and frigid temperatures are typical for the season, heated storage units are a solution you’ll find to keep storage facilities temperate when the temperature drops.

As you prepare to move your items to self storage, it’s important to prep them right. Use these tips to help you.

Create a List – During a busy move, it’s easy to lose track of items you’re putting into storage. Create a checklist of all items you plan to keep in the self-storage unit. Make two copies — one for yourself and the other you can leave inside the storage unit. This way, when you want to grab something from your storage unit, you’ll know what exactly is in the unit.

Clean and Vacuum Belongings – Climate controlled units are typically clean and dust-free, so you’ll want to make sure your items are clean to begin with. Doing so will help keep them in good condition and help prevent that musty smell when you pull them out from storage. Vacuum all items, wipe down all surfaces with a gentle cleaning spray, and dry them completely before storing.

Though climate controlled storage limits the exposure your belongings have to the elements, packing your items right can go a long way in ensuring they remain damage-free.

Ensure all your items are dry, to limit the chance of mold or mildew developing over time. Seal cartons tightly to keep moisture out.

Use high quality boxes and packing supplies.

Pack sweaters and clothing in wardrobe boxes or zippered garment bags. Keep mattresses in special storage bags to keep them in the best possible shape during storage.

When you’ve rented your storage unit and you’re all packed up, you want to make sure you have everything you need to get your items into your storage unit. Make sure you’ve checked the access hours at your storage facility, you have your gate code, the location of your stage unit, your lock and key, and, of course, help. Many facilities have dollies or hand trucks that can help move your items from your vehicle to your cheap storage unit.

This really depends on the type of items you’re storing, the weather in the area, and for how long you intend to store. If you live in an area with extreme climate or high humidity and are storing extreme temperature sensitive items for a long duration, then climate controlled storage is probably a good idea. Climate controlled storage units are temperature controlled and allow you to store your items that are sensitive to extreme temperatures on either end of the spectrum. It is ideal for long-term storage of items such as, wood furniture, metals, and fabric.

Many of our facilities offer indoor climate controlled storage units. When you book a climate controlled storage unit at CubeSmart, we use reasonable efforts to maintain a temperature between 50 and 80 degrees and help to limit exposure to extreme cold and extreme heat. While it may not always feel comfortable for you, this temperature is perfectly fine for most stored items.

When deciding if climate controlled storage is right for you, you’ll want to consider if the item(s) are susceptible to mold or mildew or if they can warp, crack, or deteriorate when exposed to extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations. For example:
